Destiny Awaits (From Star Trek: Dawn of Destiny)

ON:
[San Francisco, CA, Earth]

Cameron had been asleep when the computer started beeping. She knew the sound. It was the sound of an incoming transmission. She slowly opened her eyes and looked across the room at the communication screen. She couldn't read the screen very well, so she sat up and moved toward it. Looking straight at it, and rubbing her eyes to get the sleep out, Cameron read the announcement.

Incoming Message from Admiral Franklin, Starfleet Academy, Assignment Director

Cameron knew what this was about. It was her future. Her destiny. She hesitated for another moment before pressing the accept button.

The screen transformed and Admiral Robert Franklin appeared. "Good morning, Ensign Walters. Did I wake you?"

Cameron tried to play off her tiredness. "No, sir," she said, concealing a yawn. "Been awake for a while."

"Good. I finally have your assignment."

~Finally~ Cameron thought. She had graduated two months ago and still hadn't been assigned to a ship. She wondered why no ship had wanted her, but she stopped herself before she got any further into that thought. "What's the assignment?" she asked the admiral.

"You are being assigned to the USS Edmonton as their Chief Engineer."

~Chief Engineer?~ she thought with excitement. "Yes, sir," she said plainly. "USS Edmonton. Thank you, sir."

"Walters," he started. "You are also being promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade."

That news made Cameron smile. "Thank you, sir," she said with a smile.

"You're welcome. The information on where to report is in this file I'm sending you," he paused. "Say hello to your parents for me when you get a chance. Franklin out."

The screen went blank and Cameron couldn't help but smile. This was it. This was where she belonged. Chief Engineer. Lieutenant J.G. On the USS Edmonton - wherever it was. She opened the file that the admiral had sent and started to read through it. Cameron moved toward her closet and opened it up. She looked at her clothes, her uniforms, and the rest of her junk. Cameron grabbed her duffel from the floor and started to pack her things.
