"Late For Work" (From Florida State Police PBEM - no longer active)

Date: February 01, 2005
Time: 0730 hours
Location: Sanford, headed towards Post 7 HQ

Quinn was sitting at a four way stop, waiting his turn, when a car going the opposite way, ran the stop sign, almost hitting another car and him.

"It's going to be one of those days," Quinn said as he flipped the sirens on and started to make his u-turn.

Headed in the proper direction, Quinn saw the car and tried to read the license plate. There wasn't one, though and that got Quinn to thinking that it was a stolen car and why he was not stopping.

Quinn slammed the radio down and continued driving. Luckily, it was still early in the morning and a lot of traffic had yet to appear on the streets. He noticed the car take a turn into a luxury car dealership.

"Huh?" Quinn wondered aloud. He saw the car come to a stop and a man get out of the vehicle. Quinn followed the car into the parking lot and left his vehicle.

Quinn ran into the office and found the man speaking with someone else. Quinn stepped up to him and the man cowered.

"I'm sorry, officer. I needed to get to work," he pleaded between breaths.

"Sir, you ran a stop sign, you were speeding and you were evading an officer. All three counts are punishable with jail time and fines."

"Please, I didn't mean to. I just needed to get the car back to the lot."

"Why?"

"I borrowed it last night to impress a girl. She likes nice cars, so I took one home. But I didn't want the General Manager to see that there was a car missing from the lot and report. So I had to get here before he did."

"When does he arrive?"

A man entered the office building looking around. "Is there a problem here, officer?" he said as he approached Quinn.

"Yes, sir. My name is Quinn Hathaway. I am with the Florida State Police. This man . . ." Quinn hadn't even gotten his name, so he pointed. "This man took one of the vehicles off of your premises last night for a date. However, in order to get it here before your arrival, he broke the law. Two traffic violations and evading an officer. I am going to have to arrest him."

The General Manager listened quietly as Quinn explained the situation. He sighed and then looked at the young suspect. "I'm sorry. You'll have to go with the officer."

Quinn moved behind the gentleman. "Place your hands on your head," he said taking his cuffs off of his belt. As Quinn was placing the cuffs on, he began to Mirandize the suspect.

As Quinn left with the suspect in front of him, the General Manager stopped them. "And, Roger, you're fired." The young man's face became dejected even more and he slouched as he was led out to Quinn's vehicle. Quinn opened the back door and placed him inside. Walking to the other side of the car, Quinn got in and radioed the station.
